I know I have an older device (Oneplus 6) but lag is getting worse. I now lose anywhere from 3 to 12 seconds per fight. Each freeze costs 3 to 4 seconds. I always get at least one freeze, and often more, with once having 4.

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing lag issues.
After investigating the Android smartphone model you reported, we were able to confirm that the CPU of your smartphone is not supported by Monster Hunter Now (Snapdragon 855 or higher).
Therefore, even if you were able to play Monster Hunter Now, it may not function properly.
When a technical issue occurs, we are not able to provide support on the unsupported device, even if you were able to start playing the game on the same device.

Thanks for the response. I fully understand about the CPU support. It was working ok until the last few updates but I guess it’s time to upgrade my device. I hope that will work, though OP has a fairly new device and has lag issues (with a CPU higher than Snapdragon855).
I have updated to v78.0 before, the game is quite smooth. There is no or rarely lagging during battle.
After that the app is updated to v78.2, the lag and freezing is happening again like v77.

・Uninstall/reinstall the app from Play Store
・Restart your device
・Download all game assets before going for a Hunt
・Toggle to a low graphic setting/try adjusting the graphics from the App Settings
