Adventure Sync cannot be enabled if Location Permission is not set to "Allow all the time" manually via system settings

Steps

  1. Manually set the Location Permission for the game to anything but “Allow all the time”. (This can happen naturally when user reinstalls the game.)
  2. Launch the game and proceed to attempt to enable Adventure Sync.
  3. Observe that the game immediately shows “Adventure Sync Disabled” instead of asking for permission to set the Location Permission to “Allow all the time”.

Expected

  1. The game should show the appropriate UI to request for the Location Permission to be set to “Allow all the time” and not have user manually change the permission in the system settings.

Prior to v84, the game would show the pop-up to ask user to allow it to use the location data all the time. It has stopped working properly since v84, and persists in v85. I first found this issue in v84 but forgot to report it earlier. I’m not sure if it existed since before v84.

Thank you very much for posting this video! It was exactly what was happening to me and fixed it.

One suggestion, I already had my location permissions already set to “Allow only while using the app”. You might want to add a step “Change the locations permissions to ‘Allow all the time’, and then enable Adventure Sync to get the Ad Sync enabled screen to pop up”, at the end ‘Steps’ section. Just thought thought I’d give a suggestion, but your post already super helpful the way it is now.

NOTE: This happened to me during May of 2025, and I noticed your post was on Oct. 2024, and I don’t see Niantic having a post about fixing this issue. Apparently they still haven’t got it fixed :slightly_frowning_face:

My post is supposed to be a defect report, not a solution, hence I didn’t end the steps with the solution.

The problem here is that the game ought to ask for the right permissions as it used to in the earlier life of the game.

And… I am dismayed that this issue is actually still happening. Thanks for reporting this.

@NianticModKKI, please remind the development team to work on this. It used to work before, so it shouldn’t be difficult to make it work again. No matter how low priority an issue is, there should be a reasonable time frame for all reported issues to be fixed so that it doesn’t reflect poorly on the entire development team.
