Steps

  1. Equip a melee weapon (e.g. Lance) and a set of equipment that has the Lock On skill.
  2. Begin a hunt against a large monster that has lockable body parts that are far away from the main body (e.g. Rathian). The following steps will describe the experience with Rathian, but other monsters would have similar issues when their lockable body parts are far away from the main body.
  3. During the hunt, lock on to the Rathian’s tail, and proceed to get behind Rathian and go as close to her body from behind her as possible.
  4. Observe that the hunter’s avatar is still facing the Rathian’s body when the locked-on tail is behind the avatar, and the body movements and attacks are all aimed at the body rather than the locked-on body part, which is the tail in this scenario. The existing experience makes it difficult to attack the body parts of large monsters which have extremely large body proportions compared to other large monsters that are more compact in their figure, and the behaviour doesn’t befit the name of “Lock On”.

Expected

  1. Since a body part is locked on, the avatar should centre its aim and movements at the monster’s locked-on body part instead of the centre of the monster.

Note: This experience has been going on since the beginning of the game.

その他の情報/Other Information

Can’t be mitigated other than getting into a rather awkward position or switch to full gyro mode in order to aim at certain body parts, which defeats the purpose of having the Lock On skill.

Hello, @Stampeder! Thanks for writing in with detailed information on the lock-on feature.

I’d like to share that when the lock-on position is behind the hunter, the character is designed not to turn around. This is intentional to prevent the character from spinning in circles.

We appreciate your support and findings!

Hi @NianticModTP, thank you for the response!

That’s an unexpected “feature”. Personally, I don’t see an issue with the character spinning in circles since the character would be facing either the main body when not locked on, and if the monster moves past the character quickly, the character will “spin” anyway.

The only difference is that the character ought to face the locked-on body part when the character has locked onto a body part, therefore centering its movement on the locked-on body part instead of the monster’s main body. There’s no reason for the character to “spin in circles” since it’s just a change of anchor for where the character faces.

Hopefully this behaviour can be adjusted in the future. Please, kindly let the development team know this as a suggestion. :pray:t2:

I agree wholeheartedly with Stampeder here. I thought it was a bug and had no idea it was intentional. It is quite frustrating and makes aim very difficult from up close!
