Smelts should be transferable between armour pieces.

  • We have already worked really hard to upgrade that armour piece to Grade 8

  • We have already hunted and slain a specific monster in order to get the particular Driftstone that we want. Often many of that monster, or group of monsters, since Driftstones do not drop all of the time

  • We have already walked 5km in order to smelt that Driftstone onto that armour piece

  • Despite all of this, we still have a 96.7% chance of NOT getting the skill that we want

  • We then have to hunt several more of the same group of monsters in order to get another of the same Driftstone and then try again. And again and again and again.

Every one of my primary armour pieces has been full for months. I have gone past the point on each one of replacing the totally rubbish skills with not quite so rubbish skills and am now LITERALLY replacing exact like for like on all of them, still with nothing worth keeping coming out of each smelt.

I have been trying for months to get Ice Attack either on my Barioth gloves or on my Legiana waist, to no avail. However, I have got TWO Ice Attack smelts on my Basarios boots, while trying to get Critical Eye or Aggressive Dodger, and this is utterly useless because I don’t even have an Ice Gunlance!

It would be marginally useful if the two Ice Attacks could stack, but they don’t. It is either/or, and neither Ice Attack is of any use on my Basarios boots. They are needed on my Barioth gloves or my Legiana waist, not on my Basarios boots.

So I have two Ice Attacks that I cannot use and two armour pieces that desperately need those Ice Attacks. I have nothing worth keeping on any of those armour pieces, despite dozens of smelts on all three. Which is to say HUNDREDS OF KILOMETRES of walking for NOTHING. At least as far as the game goes.

Driftsmelting is an excellent idea, implemented incredibly badly. We need to be able to transfer these armour skills for which we have worked so hard to the armour pieces where they are actually needed.

If I were a king in the Middle Ages and my chief armourer were to say “yes, I can make you some weapons, but there is only a 3.3% chance that it will actually do what you want”, that armourer would be out of a job before sundown.

Niantic’s armourers need to step up their game and make the smelting system, for which we all grind so hard, actually work.

EDIT: Given the additional post that I made below, with the screenshots showing exactly what I mean, maybe a check could be added, after the driftsmelting has completed, to see what skills are already on that armour piece and strike out those skills before the RNG calculation is made. At least this way, we get something new on each piece all the time, not endless duplicates. But there are still more than 10 skills available, so you still have to choose what to delete. It would just be good if we were not always deleting the new skill because it is exactly the same as we already have (and don’t need).

We still need the skills to be transferable between armour pieces; this would just be an additional improvement.

現状/Current Status

Smelts are not transferable between armour pieces. The good skills almost never come, and when they do are almost always on an armour piece that cannot use them.
