Slicing Ammo aimed at Astalos’s tail tip is unable to cut the tail. In one of the video clips, it shows that 1 Slicing Ammo is sufficient to cut the tail off a 6-star Astalos. In the other video clip, 2 Slicing Ammo aimed at the tail tip doesn’t cut the tail, despite dealing about 50% of Astalos’s health. The same Lvl 5 Partbreaker build was used for both hunts.
Although specifically the Legiana HBG was used, it’s very likely this bug applies to Slicing Ammo from all bowguns. It’s also possible that sever damage from all weapons is similarly unable to cut from the tail tip, but this is harder for me to test.
その他の情報/Other Information
The issue has persisted across every Astalos hunt, where I always bring Legiana HBG.

Upon further testing against a 7-star Astalos, I believe ALL severing damage cannot cut the tail tip. I first continued my experiments with Legiana LBG, where 2 Slicing Ammo damaging the tail tip did not produce a tail cut. Then with Girros GL, a wyrmstake to the tail normally cuts Astalos’s tail, but doesn’t when the wyrmstake lands on the tail tip.
I determined whether or not I was targeting the tail tip based on the color of damage numbers, as the tail tip is distinctly considered a weakspot with better hitzone values. Gyro aim was necessary when testing Gunlance, since Lock-On typically targets the center of the tail.

Interesting find. It may be as designed eh?
Looking at the tail tip, it looks like it’s just bones and not the actual meat of the tail, as compared to the Rath family tails, where the tail tip is still quite meaty.
I wonder if Malzeno tail is also the same since both of their tail tips are quite similar, but I’ve never been able to observe it up close and I won’t hunt it solo to isolate the variables.
As a long-time bowgun user, I’m very used to the idea of some tail tips being weakspots, which is a mechanic that helps me cut the tails off of the Rathalos and Rathian subspecies.
I’d be very surprised (and very sad) if this was intended, since I’d have to consciously avoid targeting the tail tip… which would honestly not be hard to do since it’s already so small xD
Personally, I welcome these little changes. Keeps me on the toe and don’t always expect that the same formula will work on new monsters all the time (beyond timing and pattern changes, which are of course anyway since they’re different monsters).
I think the melee guys who are locking on to the tail and yet still unable to cut the tail because of hitbox/reach issues are having a harder time
At least for us ranged users can just adjust our aiming on the fly, but the lock on mechanism is a systemic issue.
