Questions about breaking monster's part

I am using range weapons, if I hit the monster’s tail, am I doing damage to the tail? Will I be able to break the tail if I kept hitting at it?
For the head, if I landed my hits on its neck, am I doing damage to the head as well? If so, will I be able to break the head just by hitting the neck?
Thank you for any advice.

Unless you are using cutting ammo or dragon piercer, you will not be able to cut off the tail. Ranged damage is incapable of cutting.

For the head part that actually depends. For instance if you attack neck of Khezu, you will be able to break it’s head cause it’s just a giant neck with teeth. However, if it’s rathian, then you have to land your hits straight on the head in order to break it

#1) Is the tail BREAKABLE OR SEVERABLE ? #1.A) IF BREAKABLE then yes. Legiana has breakable tail. #2) Will I be able to break the tail if I kept hitting at it? #2.A) yes. Check hunter guide for reference. In monster section under each monster. #3) For the head, if I landed my hits on its neck, am I doing damage to the head as well? #3A) Yes but this also depends on ammo pierce goes through parts soo the dmh if placed right would dmg head and back as well as tail if breakable . Just aim where you think the ears of monster (behind eyes)

Thank you for the reply.
If my ammo is not sever, bu the tail require sever damage to break, will I be doing part damage so that if other players in the team has sever damage, they will be able to break it on top of my non-sever damage? For example, the tail requires 1000 damage to break, if I deal 500 non-sever damage to it, does it means that my other team mates only needs to deal 500 damage with at least the last hit damage being sever damage?
For #3A) Assuming the ammo pierce through the head, since the damage figures displayed only popup somewhere near the area it hits, does it mean all parts (as mentioned) head, back and tail receive same part damage? For example, if the pierce damage displayed show 100, 100, 100, 100, does it means the head, back and tail all receive 400 part damage, but the damage HP only reduce by 400?
Sorry if this may sound silly of me, but this is quite confusing to me. Thank you.

#1Q) my ammo is not sever, bu the tail require sever damage to break, will I be doing part damage so that if other players in the team has sever damage, they will be able to break it on top of my non-sever damage? #1A) NO. Only severable dmg contributes to the sever.
For #3A.2) Assuming the ammo pierce through the head, since the damage figures displayed only popup somewhere near the area it hits, does it mean all parts (as mentioned) head, back and tail receive same part damage? #3A.2) NO. Each body part has a Hit zone value.
Theres much to this answer soo let me answer this with much more detail…

To understand HIT ZONE VALUES ON ALL BODY PARTS…
Understand this first… theres 3 technically 4 ways we can dish dmg to each part.

  1. sever/slice (can break and sever) bow special first two hits cause sever*
2)blunt ( can only break not sever) can cause knock out status
  2. ranged dmg (works like blunt but not all bullets cause knock out and no arrows cause knock out) stickies cause knock out status when placed on or near head.
  3. Blast Dmg ( gun lance shells , gun lamce special and lbg special) these types of dmg ignore h.z.v defenses.

Now ALL body parts have different HP and Hitzone values.
Hit zone values (h.v.z) is why if your weapon is raw with no elemental shows small grey/white numbers when say your bullets hit a basarios anywhere (tummy excluded) but as soon as his part turns red from heat they change the color on dmg from grey/white to orange edges and white words. Now say if you used coral lbg the weapon matches his elemental weakness and the colors are different for dmg.
The hard hit zone values orange edges white numbers. The soft hitzone values for elemental match up (when basarios turns red on parts that where hard… heated red are now soft) would be dark orange edges and orange numbers.
I will add offical links to the color representative info. As well as part breaks.

You should note what the dmg numbers look like as the dmg is connecting.
Lets use a pierce raw lbg and a pierce coral lbg bullets against a basarios since his parts are extra hard and unique

If you aim raw at his belly with pierce bullets… you will see a mix as your dmg head on goes through head, stomach ,legs and maybe tail. FYI THERE ARE H.Z.V FOR PARTS YOU CANT BREAK…legs mainly.
The pierce will go from grey(hard) for head , orange edge white inside for belly (soft) , legs grey (hard h.z.v) and tail probably orange edge white inside.
Now for coral lbg on pierce bullets it would display like this from head on shot.
Head orange edge/white inside(hard h.z.v), belly redish orange edges/orange inside the numbers (soft h.z.v) legs orange edge whiteinside numbers (hard)
I need to go catch a 8.* tripple jho hat right now. Ask any questions will take me time to get around to sharing links

Just remember all weapon dmg types have different h.z.v on parts

Also in general head and tails always have most hp. If you dont have part breaker 4-5 then just pick one and some other parts.

I strongly suggest you ready everything on this page.
Soft=weak hzv (works with weakness exploit or this is how to target a part to keep qeakness exploit triggered omly on the soft part)
Hard= not weak hzv

Soft/weak= big dmg
Hard/non weak = little dmg
