Gunlance cannot receive the same level of power up from style level increase as other weapons

For weapons other than gunlance, the development team plan on making upgrading to style level 20 equal to 20% damage boost, please also increase the shelling damage by 20% when a gunlance reach style level 20.
If gunlance’s shelling is left behind the damage upgrade, at some point gunlance player will need to avoid shelling at all which are the cases for some Monster Hunter series.

The Gunlance gains minimal damage boosts from style upgrades because its shelling does not benefit from increased critical hit chance or attack power.

Actually, choosing one of the two styles already boosts the shelling power in a their respective ways:

  1. For Blast Dash, the aerial burst deals more damage than the grounded full burst. Using the Ground Splitter also confers +15% damage to shelling attacks, which only makes the aerial burst more potent.
  2. For Guard Reload, after using Erupting Cannon, you will now shell at the same time as your physical attacks. That’s 2-in-1 attack. You don’t have to choose between shelling or swinging anymore. It’s more like a Gunblade now.

So, in a way, there is a power-up to shelling. It’s just not done in the same way as the other weapons. Other weapons also don’t get this kind of boost as well. Since Gunlance is a weapon that has two major ways of playing (shelling and non-shelling ways), and the shelling damage is not upgraded the same way as other weapon types, we shouldn’t expect the style upgrade levels to improve the shelling power the same way it does for other straightforward weapon types.

In fact, the way it’s done for gunlance is consistent with how it’s been done for gunlance throughout the normal upgrading process.
Normal upgrading:

  1. Shelling damage increases only at major upgrade steps, not the sub-steps (e.g. 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, x.1)
  2. x.2 to x.5 do nothing for shelling, only further improves physical attack damage and elemental performance.

Style upgrading:

  1. Shelling performance output increased upon choosing a style at level 5 (based on the videos I’ve seen thus far, quite a huge boost actually)
  2. All other levels improve physical attack damage and elemental performance at incremental values, not dissimilar from normal upgrading.

Sorry to disagree with you, i think the power the player gain from choose the style should be another topic, if you are taking the power gunlance gain from choose a style and compare it to the style level up of other weapons, it is completely wrong in my opinion. Most if not all weapons gain damage increase proportionate the increase in damage number of the weapon. However, a 20% increase in the damage number of a gunlance may only result in 10% (if not less) increase in damage, unless you avoid shelling at all, then it will be a 20% increase. Why 20%? Because the dev. team said on their stream.

Apart from the consistency you mentioned for gunlance upgrade. Yes, in MHN shelling damage only increase if there is a grade increase, but it does not justify gunlance is treated fairly and correctly. Let say there is another power up system after 2 years and the damage number is inflated so every other weapon has 4000+ damage but still G10 only. Do you think gunlance shelling should still be doing the same damage because there is no G11?

Probably good idea for players to choose 5% more shelling damage as customizable option instead of attack: affinity : elemental value.
