A training dummy would be useful for learning some of the more complex weapons
You can enter a hunt against a small flying monster, move slight away so you won’t hit the monster, then start swinging. Enable gyro so you can face away from the monster and ensure that your hits will not go towards the monster.

This is true, but it’d be useful to have something similar to the other games where it tells you what moves you are using as well as a damage meter.
I see newer players constantly asking about basic controls that are not explained clearly by the game. A training area would help with this.
Even experienced hunters who dabble into new weapons are also looking for the weapon controls But yeah, until there’s a training area, the small monsters are the best for now. Practice a few rounds, then start practising against live large monsters.
I always find that getting hit while learning a new weapon helps speed up learning—the pressure to stop getting hit because of limited recovery options.
After you stop getting hit, then it comes the phase of non-stop hitting of the monster until the monster stops.
