Latent power is… confusing…

I don’t seem to understand how latent power works overall, and I find that extremely confusing. I REALLY need some help to understand the function of latent power. How does it work? How is it activated? What are these “specific conditions”?

But its activated after 30ish sec in the battle. The more attacks you land, the faster it activates

Every attack has something called “Motion Value” (MV).

This MV is a percentage of the weapon’s total attack power, and is one of the multiplication factors in the damage formula. Slower, harder-hitting weapons would have a higher MV compared to weapons that hit faster (e.g. Great Sword vs Dual Blades), therefore GS can achieve higher per-hit damage compared to DB despite being at the same total attack power, because of this “MV”.

Latent Power works by “counting down” to a hidden value either by the passage of time or by landing hits with your attacks and then shave off the countdown with the attacks’ MV.

Through the work of others, it was found that 1 second of time that passed equals to 100% MV (otherwise annotated simply as “100 MV”—just remember that MV is always a percentage value, regardless of whether there is a percentage symbol after the number or not). This is not a whole block and counts by the milliseconds. This means that you don’t have to wait for 1 second for 100 MV to be ticked off; if you were 50 MV away from activating Latent Power, it will activate once 0.5 second passes, not 1 second.

Without landing any attacks at all, Latent Power will activate once 48 seconds passed.

This means that Latent Power “counts down” towards 48 x 100 = 4800 MV.

When you land an attack, you shave an x amount of MV off that 4800 MV, where x is the MV of the attack that landed.
When time passes, you shave 100 MV per second off that 4800 MV, down to the millsecond/decimal precision.

Can you see where this goes now?

In practice, this means that the more you land attacks with high MV moves (that results in a high MV-per-second), the faster you can activate Latent Power.

Some weapon types, and some weapons within a particular type, have the potential to activate sooner than other weapons/weapon types. Black Diablos Bow is famous for being very fast in activating LP because of its 1-1-4-4 charge pattern.

For example, if you can activate LP at the 30s mark (Hunt Timer is 45), this means that your MV/s is [4800 - (30 * 100)] / 30 = [4800 - 3000] / 30 = 60 MV/s. You can use this metric to compare your moveset’s efficiency/performance against your other weapons/monsters and compare between other players too to find the most efficient moveset.

Damage is irrelevant in the activation process of LP. It all depends on the MV of your attacks and whether you landed them or not. Missed attacks do not count at all. Therefore, being able to skilfully dish out attacks at a high MV-per-second (MV/s) is key to activating Latent Power as early as possible. Whether you can deal damage or not is a separate topic, so you can get the same activation time between a 1.1 weapon and a 10.5 weapon against the same monster if you use the same moveset, because LP is concerned with MV only, not the damage output.

Hope this helps.

Geez, that overcomplicated for no reason… but hey, pretty cool mechanics nonetheless.

It’s not complicated. It’s a skill that rewards precise aggression. In practice, it’s just an affinity skill + concentration that unlocks as you land hits. This also naturally means it has greater application in longer fights, such as against Elder Dragons.
