Can we make defense stat actually matter?

Especially for melee? Make it scale with every point instead of brakepoints like it is now. Upgrading my def from 500 to 650 changed nothing vs 8* diablos and his attacks still oneshot from full hp for example.
With current lag/stutter situation, defene doing abslutely othing really discourages from playing melee…

It wasn’t at breakpoints in the first place. Different attacks have different damage values, similar to our weapons’ motion values. If you get hit by an attack at its most powerful point and you have barely sufficient defense, don’t expect to survive.

650 is not even full 7.5 (which would be 660), and you’re facing one of the late-stage monsters (base 5-star) at 8-star strength. Similar to how you need a stronger weapon to finish Diablos vs a weaker ice-weak monster, you also need more defense in order to survive their attacks.

My full 7.5 armor has saved me a lot of meds, so defense isn’t useless. Once I even survived a 9-star Legiana’s dash attack—took like 90 damage. I wasn’t expecting to survive, but I did, and I finished it off instead of having to spend a med to restart the hunt.

I intend to go even higher when I have the spare mats and zenny to do so.

Defense in monhun was always more about having window to make a mistake, maybe two. Never to the point that you’ll get Scott free when 20 tons of angry pregnant flying molerat with horns runs you down cause you stepped on her favourite cacti munchies

While I must say that lag is kind of an issue rn, this is still skill based game and you can past just this much on gear alone. Plus, it’s mighty Bushido of you to rock with what is essentially one of the strongest monsters in the game on equivalent to g rank while undergeared. BD doesn’t need motion adjustments. Defense doesn’t need it either

Defense has been trash from the start, i focus on weapons instead with exception of few gear peices that get an extra skill point at 6*

Returning player so a bit peeved i have no forum history dispite pointing out the same issues we have now that have been present at launch such as lag or stutters costing potions or hunts but even for paying players a complete unwillingness to reinburst fake digital items for issues they cause.

Capcom did monster hunter dirty by lisensing to niantic…

Not sure if it’s still accurate but I once read about if you have the defence below recommended (it used to show last time), you take another 100%dmg for every 100def difference (roughly).

I’m at 800def and 8*Diablos charge did 36damage.

That’s said, I agree that defence should matter more for melee especially.

It matters for ranged users too, especially for the closed-range ones using spread type shots and even for long-range shooters against some monsters with wide/long-range attacks. Perfect Evasion is my bread-and-butter for my Pukei Bow, and having high defense can help save the hunt.

Well it’s not that defense doesn’t matter at all. It’s that defense stops mattering wherever you aren’t one shot by a monster
